Invest in and reward innovation

From internal crowdsourcing to consulting with futurists, companies that have IT-driven business innovation in their DNA invest in and reward innovation, according to a recent Harvard Business Review report.

The survey of 420 business leaders found that organizations with innovative IT are twice as likely as ad hoc innovators or low prioritizers to fund emerging technologies groups. They also make sure to reward employees who go above and beyond.

The report notes that rewards don’t just need to be financial, saying that “oftentimes recognition and the ability to work on interesting projects have a greater impact.” At DIRECTV, the reward system focuses more on recognition said DIRECTV Senior Vice President of Information Technology Sven Gerjets.

“I think primarily the reward system for innovation at DIRECTV is around recognition. We also do a lot with patent processes. So if we have innovations that are patentable, we will patent those with the individuals’ names and they get a plaque from the company that they can hang on their wall that says that they got a patent for X. We’ve really focused on trying to raise the credibility of the people that are coming up with these ideas,” Gerjets said.
